Membership is open to all those with formal training in plant biology, in such areas as Botany, Plant Ecology, Plant Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Forest Biology, or a similar plant-related field. Applicable training would include that resulting from an undergraduate (Honours or Major) or advanced degree. Others not meeting the formal degree requirement (this includes undergraduate students) may apply for an Associate Membership, which carries all privileges except voting. All applications for membership are subject to approval by the Executive. The annual membership fee is set at $25 (students $10).

All members are encouraged to present papers and posters at meetings and to participate in other activities. Prizes are awarded for the best student poster and oral presentation at science meetings in the fall.
